Not Every Box Can Hold a Fan

When to Have a Fan Installed by an Electrician

A ceiling fan hangs overhead and moves constantly, which is exactly why the box behind it matters. Standard light fixture boxes are not built to carry that weight or vibration, and a lot of the wobbling fans we are called out to fix were hung on one.

Call us if:

  • There is no existing fixture where you want the fan
  • The current box is a light box, not a fan rated box
  • Your fan wobbles, ticks, or hums
  • The ceiling is vaulted, sloped, or two stories up
  • You want a wall switch instead of a pull chain
  • The fan is going on a porch, patio, or other damp location

    How a Fan Install Goes

Most fan installs are quick. The ones that are not are usually about access and support, and we sort that out before we quote.

    • 1

      We Check the Support
We look at what is behind the ceiling, whether the box is fan rated, and whether the framing can carry the load. If a brace is needed we install one.
    • 2

      We Wire the Controls
Pull chains, a wall control, a remote, or separate switching for the fan and the light. We wire it the way you actually want to use it.
    • 3

      We Balance and Test
The fan goes up, gets balanced through every speed, and we make sure it runs quiet before we pack up.

    Ceiling Fan FAQs

What Denver area homeowners ask us most about ceiling fan installation.

Swapping a fan for a new one where a fan rated box already exists is inexpensive and quick. The price goes up if we have to install a fan rated box or brace, add a switch leg, run a new circuit, or work on a vaulted or two story ceiling. You get a firm price before we start.

Yes. We run the circuit, cut in a fan rated box, and add wall switching so it operates the way you want. That is a very common request in bedrooms and enclosed porches that were built without overhead fixtures.

A fan rated box is marked as such and is anchored to framing or a brace, not just screwed to drywall. If your fan was hung on a standard light box it can loosen over time, which is what causes most wobbling. We check this on every install and replace the box when it is not right.

Yes. Sloped ceilings need the correct mounting adapter and usually a downrod to keep the blades clear of the slope, and tall rooms need the right equipment to work safely. Both are routine for us.

Yes. Covered porches need a damp rated fan and open or exposed areas need a wet rated fan. Using an indoor fan outside is the fastest way to end up with a rusted motor and a warranty claim that gets denied, so we make sure the right one goes up.

Remotes are easiest when there is no convenient switch location, but they rely on a receiver in the fan canopy and a battery you will eventually replace. A wall control is more reliable long term. If there is already a switch at the door, we usually recommend wiring it to the wall.

A wobbling fan is not just annoying. It usually means it is hanging from something that was never meant to hold it.

Outdoor and Vaulted Ceiling Fan Installation

Two situations account for most of the fan calls we get around Lake Norman. The first is outdoor living space. Covered porches, screened rooms, and patios all need a fan built for moisture, and the rating matters. Damp rated fans are for covered areas that never get direct rain. Wet rated fans are for open or exposed spots. Putting an indoor fan outside voids the warranty and rusts the motor within a season or two.

The second is height. Great rooms, vaulted ceilings, and two story foyers need the right downrod length to move air where people actually are, plus a sloped ceiling adapter so the blades clear the pitch. Hang a fan too tight to a high ceiling and it will move almost no air at all.

We handle both, including the equipment needed to work safely at height and the bracing needed to support a fan where no fixture existed before.
