Signs Your Home Needs Rewiring

Wiring does not last forever. Insulation dries out, connections loosen, and circuits that were fine for a 1960s household get asked to run a modern one. The house usually tells you before it becomes dangerous.

Worth having looked at if you have:

  • Cloth covered, knob and tube, or aluminum branch wiring
  • Two prong outlets with no ground anywhere in the house
  • Outlets or switch plates that feel warm or look discolored
  • Breakers that trip constantly no matter what you unplug
  • An insurance carrier asking you to update the wiring
  • Extension cords doing the job permanent circuits should do

    How a Rewire Works

Nobody wants an open ended project inside their walls. Here is how we keep a rewire predictable from the first visit.

    • 1

      We Look Behind the Walls
We open outlets, switches, and the panel to identify what wiring you actually have and how much of it needs to go. Plenty of homes we look at need far less than the owner feared.
    • 2

      You Get a Written Scope
You receive a room by room scope and a firm price before anything is opened up. If the budget calls for it, we will phase the work so the most urgent circuits get handled first.
    • 3

      We Rewire and Inspect
We pull the permit, run the new wiring with as little drywall damage as the job allows, label every circuit, and stay with it through the county inspection.

    Rewiring and Code Correction FAQs

The questions we get most from homeowners weighing a rewire or working through a failed inspection.

Cost tracks square footage, how many circuits are involved, how accessible the walls and attic are, and whether the panel has to be replaced too. A targeted rewire of a few problem circuits is a fraction of a whole home job. We give you a written, itemized scope after a free on site assessment so you are never working off a guess.

A partial rewire is often a few days. A whole home rewire on an occupied house typically runs one to two weeks. Most families stay in the home while we work, because we take it room by room and restore power at the end of each day wherever possible. We tell you the plan up front.

Not always replaced. Aluminum branch wiring can often be remediated at the connections with approved connectors, which is far less invasive and far less expensive than a full rewire. We inspect what you have and tell you honestly which route your house needs and what your insurer is likely to accept.

Knob and tube is the ungrounded wiring used in homes built before roughly 1950, run on ceramic knobs and tubes. It has no ground, the insulation is usually brittle by now, and most insurance carriers will not cover a home that still has active knob and tube. If yours is still live, replacement is the right call.

Yes, and it is a large part of what we do. Bring us the inspection report or the correction notice and we will price the items line by line, make the repairs to current code, and meet the inspector for the reinspection so your project or your closing keeps moving.

Almost always. Replacing circuits, adding grounds, and correcting violations are permitted work in Lincoln, Catawba, Iredell, Gaston, and Mecklenburg Counties. We pull the permit and handle the inspection, which also gives you a documented record that the work was done to code.

If your wiring predates your mortgage, or an inspector has already flagged it, the cheapest time to deal with it is before it becomes an emergency.

Aluminum Wiring, Knob and Tube, and Insurance Rewires

A lot of rewiring calls in this area do not start with a spark. They start with a letter. Insurance carriers have tightened up on aluminum branch wiring, knob and tube, and Federal Pacific panels, and many will not write or renew a policy until the wiring is addressed.

Real estate deals create the same urgency. A buyer inspection turns up ungrounded outlets, open splices, or reversed polarity, and suddenly there is a correction list standing between you and a closing date.

We work both of those situations constantly. We document what we find, correct it to current code under permit, and give you the paperwork your insurer, your agent, or your buyer needs to move forward.

Free assessment, a written scope, and permitted work you can document.
